Modern Messiah is a painting that is in a constant state of change. Designed to compliment my poem Modern Messiah, the canvas has morphed from a statement on writers to a collection of shapes and colours looking for a home.

The last day in 1984 was a difficult one for me. I was living alone in Germany on New Year’s eve. I had the window to my room open and could hear the revellers warming up. I started painting about the Last Day and found this.
So many mistakes in this piece and so rough it makes me cringe even now – but it did get me started and made me realise that if I wanted to get the finished item I craved it would never come quickly or without many false starts.
